I’m excited to start blogging and am happy to have you here! My name is Lurdys (pronounced Lerdis) and I’m the founder of Crochet & Twists. I’ve been sharing my creations and crochet whims on Instagram and decided that a blog would be another great way to connect with other lovers of crochet and yarn, whether you’re a maker, designer, buyer or simply a lover of crochet handmades.
My crochet focus is currently accessories for the family (e.g., baby items, hats, scarves, spa items, etc.) and accessories for the home (e.g., pillows, afghans, baskets, etc.) Here I’ll share projects, tips, patterns, and general crochet shenanigans for now and over time I’ll add more features. The frequency will likely be weekly but minimally 2x/month. Stay tuned! If there’s anything you’d like to see or learn more about, please leave a comment below. I’m not a crochet G.O.A.T. , but I’m resourceful and will find answers to any questions I can’t answer. In the meantime, I thought I’d share some things about me.
EARLY YEARS
I live in Northern California but am originally from Rochester, New York. My family is from Jamaica and yes, I often question how one goes from the heat of Jamaica to the frostiness of Rochester, but we’ll save that for another post. My Aunt Delles taught me to crochet as a child and I continued crocheting on and off over the years. I recently returned to the craft as a way to both destress and to flex my creative muscles. Didn’t realize what how great a decision that was until the Covid-19 shelter in place began in March!
MY STYLE
I love color and texture! I would be an artist but I can neither paint nor draw, LOL! Crochet allows me to channel my inner artist. It’s perfect for an analytic like myself since mathematical skills are used to create patterns and, combined with the creativity used to design an item, crochet is the perfect way to make both the left and right sides of my brain happy! My style is my tag line “Classic stitches, modern touch”. I like to modernize classic stitches with today’s colors, yarns, and textures. Other quick tidbits about me:
- My favorite place on the color wheel is in the purples, reds, pinks, aquas, turquoise, teal blues
- My hobbies when I’m not in a global pandemic shelter in place include photography, genealogy, endurance races (5k, 10k, and half marathons), and travel
- I am a 2x breast cancer survivor
- I love the beach! My dream is to have my own beach house where I can crochet in the early morning shade and enjoy the waves the rest of the day, lol
- I have two amazing sons and one cat (Chris, Paul, and Julius), they’re my pride and joy
